The winner in this third edition (2020) is Ekaitz Etxeberría Gallastegi, born on February 23, 1991, graduated (2013), Master (2014) and Doctor (2019) in History from the University of the Basque Country (Spain).
The work presented with the title “Estrategia y Táctica Militar en la Castilla del siglo XV, 1407-1492”, constitutes the Doctoral Thesis of Ekaitz Etxeberría prepared under the guidance of José Ramón Días de Durana Oriz de Urbina and Jon Andoni Fernández de Larrea Rojas. The study which was part of the PhD Program «Europe and the Atlantic World: Power, Culture and Society», addresses a very interesting but demanding topic, taking into account a certain historiographical ’emptiness’ about the practice of war in Castile throughout the four hundred century (despite the extent of relevant military events). On the other hand, the scarcity of documentation of an administrative nature forced the author to work with a high and diversified number of narrative sources, which required special cautions from the hermeneutical point of view, aggravated by the great assortment of war scenarios considered and by the diversity of the presumed military influences received, both internal and external (from Northern Europe to the Muslim world).
The jury of the Prize Young Researchers AIHM – Banco Santander Portugal 2020 distinguished the seriousness, breadth and originality of Ekaitz Etxeberría’s work, the quality of the writing and, in a special way, the importance of his historiographic contribution to the knowledge of military art Castilian in the last century of the Middle Ages.
In this 3rd edition of the Prize Young Researchers were also distinguished with Honorable Mentions the valuable works presented by Javier Albarrán Iruela (“Los discursos de guerra santa y la memoria de las primeras batallas del Islam. Al-Andalus, siglos X-XIII”) and by Pedro Filipe Fernandes Sebastião (“Os espingardeiros. Um corpo militar no alvor da Modernidade (1437-1495)”).
